In Honor of Youth Day
On June 16, 1976, youth in Soweto marched in protest against the introduction of Afrikaans as a language of instruction in township schools. Hundreds of students were killed when police opened fire on students. What began as a peaceful protest turned into a violent uprising.
The activist energy of the students has been rekindled as thousands in cities around the world have joined together to protest police brutality, demanding justice, and declaring Black Lives Matter. Women and girls in South Africa continue to demand protection as women endure violent acts that attack their bodies and take their lives.
We applaud the individual voices that are forming the screams we hear from the streets declaring, "no more." We hear you. We see you. We salute you. YOU are the heroes we have been waiting for. Change doesn't happen overnight. Yet, history proves that righteous anger, bold courage, and peaceful protest can topple systems of oppression. Please don't forget that JOY in itself is a form of resistance. Hold on to yours through the struggle.
